Bayt Gagy.

A small house on Lake Siwa. The salt lake to the north, the Great Sand Sea to the south.

A way of building

We built slowly, with what the oasis gave us, salt stone and rough-cut mountain rock, palm beams, olive wood, lime. No concrete. No hurry. Every wall was raised by Siwan hands, in the same rhythm houses here have always been raised. The thick stone walls do what they have always done in this climate: they hold the warmth of the day through cold desert nights, and keep the house cool through the heat of summer. In winter, a brick fireplace in the small library keeps the long evenings close.

Bayt Gagy is not designed against the desert; it is of it.
